- It is interesting how Han Kou expands their menu from just Oyster Noodle soup in Taiwan to literally everything from night market - sizzling steak, squid soup with sa-cha sauce, sticky rice, oyster pancake, sticky tofu and so on. But I am glad they do because I am sure all Taiwanese in NYC is grateful to have them serving here!
I tried their squid soup, sizzling steak and the stinky tofu today and I was impressed. The squid soup is just right and immediately reminds me of home. Sizzling steak took a while here and came with some pasta on the side but is not bad for merely $9.95. The stinky tofu however, is pretty darn yummy. It is not as stinky but it is fried to crispy and they are huge!
After my dinner, I relieved my desire for Taiwanese cuisine for the week... AT LEAST. This joint reminds me so much of my social life and the night market in Taiwan.

- Han Kou is a Taiwanese restaurant in the Flushing Mall food court and their dishes are as close to as authentic as any Taiwanese food that I've seen in New York. Their dishes aren't as a substitute for what you'd find in Taiwan, but I attribute that mostly to the lack of access to Taiwanese produce. I think in the Flushing Mall review, Emily L is dead on (http://www.yelp.com/). She's right, Gu-Shine is not nearly as good as Han Kou.
Han Kou's menu is pretty big, but my personal favorite here is the oyster omelet--you might need to order it in Taiwanese which is pronounced "uh-ah jian". This is as close to as authentic of a Taiwanese-style oyster omelet that I've eaten outside of Taiwan. I found the oysters to be fresher and more plentiful in theirs than in Gu-Shine's. Also, the overall consistency of the omelet and the sauce is closer to that which you get in Taiwan's night markets.
It might be helpful if you can order in Chinese when going here. I've never seen anyone speak in English. But if you can't, I'm sure you can do some pointing to get the job done! You get a receipt after ordering which has a number on it. After the dish is prepared a woman gets on an old tinny p.a. and screams out your number in Chinese. So if you can't understand numbers in Chinese, stay close to the counter and ask the lady when you think a dish similar to yours is up.
Also, if the cashier isn't there, order at the register at the shaved ice stand next door--which is also pretty damn good for Taiwanese-style shaved ice.
As long as I can't get back to Taiwan for the real thing, Han Kou will always be my go to place in New York...

Flushing Mall一定點! 又嫩又脆, 在嘴裡可以一直嚼, 最好吃的就是有那椒鹽灑在上
面, 讓味道更美好!!!
